Originally named after Tennessee politician Newton Cannon, “Cannonsburgh” was renamed “Murfreesboro” in honor of Colonel Hardy Murfree, a Revolutionary War hero– who also happened to be the great grandfather of famous author, Mary Noailles Murfree.
